Thankful for Jasmine.

On the days that I took my mom to chemotherapy, we had a routine after her appointments of getting kebabs and naan for lunch. She would always insist on ordering a lot of food, even though she didn’t have much of an appetite or sense of taste at that point. I think she enjoyed the ritual of sitting together and talking, and, like all moms, I think it gave her joy to see her children well-fed. The meal would always end with a good deal of leftovers, and she would ask the waiter for two take out containers – one she would pack for my dad and one she would send home with me for my husband.

I remember there was one night in the hospital, when she was really sick and I was staying with her overnight. My brother-in-law came by late just to sit next to her and pray. Her dinner tray was still in the room, untouched. She insisted that he have the little of cup of ice cream that was on the tray, explaining that it was really very good.

I cannot pretend to begin to express what my mom meant to me or how sorely I miss her presence. She was a tiny person with a big personality. She was funny and dramatic, bossy at times, always opinionated, and she gave me the best advice. But when I think of the main characteristic that defined who she was as a person, I think of her generosity of love and affection.

~~~
Years ago, I went with my mom to the mosque one night for evening prayers. A new girl who had just married into our community was there with her mother-in-law. After the prayers, my mom went up to her and pulled her down into a tight embrace, calling her “our nuthon bou” (new bride). This girl probably had no idea who my mom was and I could tell that she was a little reserved. As we were leaving the mosque, I sort of lectured my mom on not hugging people who didn’t know her. My mom explained how difficult it could be to get married and not know anyone in a family or community, and she hoped that one day when my sister and I got married that some auntie would love and adhor us in the same way.
I still feel my mom’s generosity of love when I’m around my brother and sister. My brother, who in my mind is still just the baby, is always checking in on his older sisters to see how we are doing. And my sister, who is now ‘the mom’ for all of us, has taken charge – making sure we are all taken care of, not only her siblings but also our dad. We are always generous with our ‘I love you’s’ to each other. There was never room for sibling rivalries in our home.
I’m thankful she was my mother. Even though she is gone, I know that her love was unconditional and it is undying and that it will sustain us entirely.
I love you Amu, you are the reason my heart beats.
Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich [Special Eats]
IMG_5278
It’s a snowy day here in New York City. Nothing more I want to do than sit on my couch and eat this simple sandwich with a tall glass of milk!
I don’t think this even constitutes a recipe so I’m not going to categorize it as such. It’s basically peanut butter with bananas on wheat bread with a drizzle of honey. Simple and sweet!IMG_5277
Happy New Year!
Pumpkin Spice Chocolate Chip Cookies [Recipes]
IMG_2887Remember a few years ago when Pumpkin Spice was the best new thing ever? There would be the annual countdown to fall and the availability of Pumpkin Spice Lattes would be a cause for national celebration!
Oh how the mighty have fallen!! Fast forward to 2014 and pumpkin spice is a laughing stock! Pumpkin Spice is your ugly cousin and you’re a basic bitch if you like her! Well, I don’t care if liking Pumpkin Spice makes me a basic! I love it (in moderation and not when it’s used inappropriately). If you think about it, pumpkin spice is really just cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves. Mmm, now that’s a delicious combination!
This recipe for Pumpkin Spice Chocolate Chip Cookies incorporates the best flavors of the fall season and it’s perfect for Thanksgiving or any lazy fall or winter weekend. If you’ve made any type of pumpkin cookie before, you know that most recipes use some type of canned pumpkin product. Those cookies always come out fluffy and cake-like, which can be good, but I was looking for a cookie recipe that came out chewy and gooey and buttery. This recipe does just that by using Pumpkin Butter instead of pumpkin puree!
Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg + 1 egg yolk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin butter (I bought mine from Trader Joe’s but you can usually find it in your grocery store near the peanut butter)
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
Recipe
  1. Mix your melted butter with the sugars until combined.
  2. Add egg, egg yolk, and vanilla.
  3. Stir in pumpkin butter until smooth.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix flour, salt, cornstarch, pumpkin pie spice and baking soda.
  5. Gradually add flour mixture to wet ingredients until dough forms.
  6. Fold in chocolate chips and then pecans or walnuts if using.
  7. Refrigerate dough for 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the cookies are slightly golden on the edges.
Hope you enjoy this beautiful season with these delicious cookies!
1520695_10102553656833039_297239225_n
In this recipe I literally baked what my mama gave me!
Whenever I go to visit my mom (or Amu as I like to call her), she hands me a huge bag of groceries which always inevitably includes a bunch of bananas. I can never finish these bananas in time so I had to figure out how to put them to good use. I have come up with a fool-proof and flexible recipe that will provide you with delicious banana muffins! You’ll have a quick and easy breakfast or snack!
Ingredients:
  • 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup oats
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
feae6dda513caa4f545f9036c194cf43
Directions:
Grapefruit Avocado Salad with Dijon Dressing [Recipes]
photo(2)This salad is not only gorgeous, it’s lick-your-plate-good. I can confirm this because I not only licked my plate, I also licked my husband’s plate. Also please make this Dijon dressing, it’s so easy and so so so so good.
Ingredients
1/2 tablespoon Dijon mustard
Juice of 1 lemon (may need less depending on size)
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (use less if using regular salt)
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
3 tablespoons good olive oil
1 ripe avocado
1 medium red grapefruit
1 cup of mixed greens (optional)
1. Whisk together the Dijon mustard, lemon juice, salt and pepper, and olive oil in a small bowl. (Taste the dressing and tweak as a needed. My measurements above are estimates).
2. Arrange a handful of greens on plate.
3. Cut your avocado in half, remove the seed, and cut thin slices lengthwise. Plate on top of the greens.
4. Peel your grapefruit and use a knife to remove the slices from the white membrane. Arrange on plate with avocado and greens.
5. Drizzle with your beautiful dressing.
6. Eat.
7. Lick your plate.
We ate this with a roast chicken. A perfect midweek dinner. I think I’m going to pair this with either poached salmon on poached shrimp next time.
Strawberry Feta Summer Salad [Recipes]
photo 1
Happy Summer All! This is a fool proof summer salad that you have either eaten or seen versions of. I’m not pretending to reinvent the wheel, but rather sharing my favorite iteration of this salad! Because, let’s be honest, when it’s a bajillion degrees outside, who wants to cook?
Ingredients
  • 1 pint of strawberries (approximately 2 cups chopped)
  • 1/2 Golden Delicious Apple
  • 3/4 cup of crumbled feta cheese
  • 1/3 cup of walnuts chopped
  • 1 bag of baby spinach (about)
  • Raspberry vinaigrette – I like to use Annie’s Lite Raspberry Vinaigrette but feel free to make your own!
1. Chop up your strawberries into quarters (depending on how big they are).
2. Slice up your apple very thin.
3. Chop up your walnuts.
4. Divide all ingredients in half and then layer baby spinach, strawberry, walnuts, feta, and repeat.
5. Drizzle with dressing (store bought or homemade).
And you’re done! Serve with grilled chicken for an easy weeknight dinner!
National Doughnut Day: Travel Edition [Special Eats]
photo 3Today, June 6, is National Doughnut Day, allegedly. I don’t have a calendar that marks all these food holidays but Facebook and Instragram told me it’s National Doughnut Day, and who am I to argue?* To celebrate this auspicious occassion, I wanted to share my recent doughnut experiences outside of the NYC area.
Federal Donuts, Philadelphia, Multiple Locations
This is the extent of my obsession with doughnuts: my husband and I took a two hour detour from our trip to the Poconos to stop by Philadelphia to pick up some delicious treats at Federal Donuts. I know, we are fatties.
I always prefer yeast over cake when it comes to my doughnuts but Federal Donuts only has the cake kind. I love them anyway especially because they have a bunch that are fresh to order like the Lavender Vanilla one pictured above. They also have specialty doughnuts with fun flavors like Chocolate Covered Strawberry (pictured below), Marshmallow Marshmallow, and Crumberry which is my favorite. It was crumbelievable!
photo 1
However, my favorite thing about Federal Donuts is that they also have crazy good fried chicken so I can satisfy my savory tooth and sweet tooth in one outing. The chicken is also fried fresh to order and the one we got was with the chili garlic glaze. 😛 So spicy and delicious!
Glazed Gourmet Doughnuts, 481 King St. Charleston SC 29403
I was in Charleston, South Carolina recently and I had to make sure to stop by Glazed Gourmet. They have crazy cool flavors like Strawberry Basil Lime, Kulfi, and Apple Pie Cheddar. We stuck with the somewhat safe choices for our first try and we were not disappointed.
Clockwise from the top: Blueberry Cheesecake, Dark Chocolate Glaze, and Raspberry
Definitely stop by Glazed Gourmet if you find yourself in beautiful Charleston!
New York City Doughnuts
If you are looking to celebrate Doughnut Day here in NYC, there are some great options I have blogged about in the past.
Remember my post about loukoumades or Greek doughnuts in Astoria?
PB&J doughnut
Or remember my favorite doughnut from last summer at Doughnut Plant in Manhattan? Look at that beauty!
So I have done my civic duty, you have no excuses to not have a doughnut today – it’s a national holiday! Wishing everyone a blessed and joyous Doughnut Day!
*Ed. Note: Being an attorney, I am totally one to argue so I will say based on my preliminary research (i.e. googling) today is actually Applesauce Cake Day, so social media, check your facts!
Flavors of Hawaii [Special Eats]
01c36639382aa22de8e487a233bebb114089bebee6
It’s hard to imagine that just weeks ago I was wearing sunglasses and flip flops in beautiful Hawaii. I’ll be honest, before I went to Hawaii my expectation was that I would be surrounded by old tourists wearing socks with sandals and eating at Outback Steakhouse. However, I’m happy to say Hawaii is amazing even with the tourist culture! Also, thanks to Yelp! and recommendations from friends, we ate great meals everyday on the islands. Below are just some of my favorite highlights from our trip.photo 1
Our first stop was the peaceful, sunny town of Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. You can’t go to Kona without having Kona coffee which is cultivated on the coffee farms of the Big Island. Our first morning we went to Splasher’s Grill and ordered a 100% Kona Coffee French Press to share. I’m not a regular coffee drinker but this coffee was fantastic and I didn’t need to add a ton of sugar and milk like I usually do. My husband, who I consider a coffee connoisseur, was in heaven!
I’m a savory breakfast girl so my breakfasts, although very delicious, consisted of pretty standard egg dishes every morning. Mr. Bake What Your Mama Gave Ya! (Mr. BWYMGY, for short), on the other hand, ordered Island Pancakes every single morning we were in Kona. We didn’t even go to the same restaurant every day! Island Pancakes are served with bananas, macadamia nuts (Hawaii grown), and a coconut syrup, instead of maple. They were so good! The subtlely sweet coconut syrup really took the pancakes to the next level.
Snacks
I love going to grocery stores while on vacation, mostly because I’m a weirdo, but also because I like to see the snacks that differ from region to region, and country to country. While in Hawaii, we stocked up on Maui Style Onion Photo Chips and Maui Shrimp Chips.
Ride that wave Mr. Onion!
Ride that wave Mr. Onion!
I ate these non-stop because I’m disgusting and apparently don’t care what I look like in a bathing suit. But you know what?, it was so worth it! The potato chips were thick and crunchy!
$RDFXU3I
The shrimp chips were excellent too and I pretty much ate them by myself because Mr. BWYMGY did not like the shrimp flavoring on them. MORE FOR ME!!
Seafood Lover’s Dream
I’m Bengali and my husband comes from a family of sailors – needless to say we love fish! We had seafood almost every day we were in Hawaii. Ono was a fish common on many menus in Hawaii. Below you see it grilled a top a salad, and also in fish ‘n’ chip form.
Fish n’ Chips
After I moved to Astoria almost four years ago, I learned from the delicious Greek eateries that you never say no to octopus. So while in Hawaii, we went to Lemongrass Bistro where we enjoyed Tako (or Octopus) Kimchee. The dish was made with succulent grilled octopus, green papaya salad, and a lemon kimchee sauce. Divine!
We also had this beautiful Ahi Poke at Jackie Rey’s Ohana Grill.
However, my most favorite seafood meal (or meal in general) was at Paia Fish Market. If you are in Maui and you plan to do the Road to Hana (which you definitely should), you will start your journey in a quaint town called Paia where this gem of a restaurant is located. I ordered the charbroiled fish which came with cajun rice and home fries. Mr. BWYMGY ordered fish tacos (always his favorite no matter where we are!).
Hipster Asian
photo 3
My first thought while at Star Noodle was that this restaurant would fit perfectly in New York City’s culinary landscape. They serve what I like to call Hipster Asian, a nuanced, high-brow version of new Asian Fusion: buns, ramen, udon, yakitori, etc. And it’s no wonder because Star Noodle Chef Sheldon Simeon took a tasting trip to New York City, sampling the noodle bars of Manhattan, before coming back to take on the role of head chef at Star Noodle. We loved this place so much, we went TWICE!
Brussel Sprouts with Kimchee Puree
It’s hard for me to think that a brussel sprout can get much better than some roasting but the kimchee elevated the flavors of this noble vegetable beautifully.
Garlic Noodles - Fresh & Fried Garlic, Dashi, Green Onion
The Garlic Noodle dish was as simple as it sounds. I’d be happy eating this dish every day of my life: REAL TALK!
Malasadas – Chocolate and Butterscotch Caramel Sauces, Peanuts
Malasadas – Chocolate and Butterscotch Caramel Sauces, Peanuts
You know how I feel about all kinds of doughnuts, so despite being uncomfortably full, we ordered these beautiful Portuguese doughnuts, also known as malasadas. Our waiter smartly advised us against taking this dish to go as we had originally planned. These bad boys were served warm and smothered with a chocolate, butterscotch, caramel sauce of your dreams.
NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM!
NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM!
They gave you a little spoon to scoop up the sauce onto your doughnut. HEAVEN.
Sweet Tooth
Speaking of delicious sweets, you can’t go to sunny Hawaii without having ice cream and sampling some tropical fruits. First stop, a fruit stand along the highway to the hotel. Definitely a overpriced tourist trap, but we couldn’t say no to this passion fruit banana smoothie!
When in Paia, stop by the Ono Gelato Company, where they have flavors like Kona Coffee, Sandy Beach (peanut butter and coconut), and Sea Mist (tea, mint, fruit).
photo 4
We went with the Sandy Beach which was served with pieces of warm chocolate brownie.
We strolled along the docks of Lahaina after our whale watching tour where we found Lappert’s Homemade Hawaiian Ice Cream. We tried Heavenly Hana which is the Hawaiian version of Rocky Road – Chocolate ice cream with marshmallow cream swirls, chocolate chunks, almonds, chocolate covered almonds & white chocolate covered macadamia nuts.
Isn’t my husband a hunky hand model?
Packing your bags already? I don’t blame you, I’m ready to go back too! Now you know where you must eat while you are in Hawaii!
Greek Loukoumades in Astoria [Reviews]
ImageI am so lucky to live in a neighborhood that has some of the best food in NYC! Recently I came across Cafe Boulis on a quiet, mostly residential area serving up Greek pastries and great coffee. If you know Astoria, you know that Greek restaurants are a dime a dozen, but Boulis alone is worth a trip to Astoria.
We went one morning in to grab a quick cup of coffee and their famous Loukoumades. Loukoumades are Greek donuts fried to order! They are served warm, drizzled with honey, and sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar. They weren’t your typical donuts – they were airy, light and delicately sweet.
Image
Look at these beauties!
Image
If you are looking for a quick breakfast in Astoria or just want to satisfy your sweet tooth, make sure you stop by Cafe Boulis. I promise you won’t be disappointed!
[Fun fact: For all you word nerds like me who like to learn the etymology of words, loukoumades comes from the Arabic word لقمة luqma(t) – meaning “mouthful or “morsel.” Bengalis also use the word lukma to mean the same!]
