Happy Birthday Bloggy!: Summer Sweets [Special Eats]

Happy Birthday to my Bloggy! Four years ago today, I started my blog by posting this recipe for Apple Crumble here. Remember that? I do! I was still recovering from the bar exam which I had just taken at the end of July. I didn’t start my new job until September and didn’t know what to do with myself. So I started this blog! I love you Bloggy, you give me a lot of happiness!

In honor of my Bloggy’s 4th Birthday, I am posting about my four favorite desserts from this summer so far.

4) Doughnut Plant (Various Locations) – Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jam Doughnut

So I’ve been a Doughnut Plant aficionado for years but I don’t find myself in Chelsea or the Lower East Side that often. Fortunately (or unfortunately?) the Oren’s Daily Roast near my office recently renovated and now they carry Doughnut Plant doughnuts! Now when I go in for my morning cup of coffee, I get a doughnut. (This is why I’m gonna be fat forever!) The doughnut pictured above is their Peanut Butter and Jam doughnut. Yum!

3) Momofuku Milk Bar (East Village) – Cereal Milk Soft Serve

So you know on Saturday morning when your eating your cereal in front of the television and at the very end you have a bowl left with the milk sweetened from your cereal? Well that’s the inspiration for the Cereal Milk Soft Serve at Momofuku Milk Bar. Even though the concept of this dessert is very familiar, the taste is so surprisingly unique. Whatever you do, make sure you get it with the cereal crunchies. I hate sprinkles in general but if sprinkles were like these crunchies, I’d get it all the time!

2) Vesta (Astoria) – Peach Shortbread

Vesta in Astoria is one of my favorite neighborhood dining spots. I’ve been there for brunch, lunch, and dinner and with various groups of people. It feels like home to me and I’ve enjoyed every meal I’ve had there. The go-to dessert to have at Vesta is the Baby Jesus Cake (not pictured above). It’s what I always get whenever I’m there and somehow manage to save room for dessert. However, one particular summer evening not too long ago, Vesta had a dessert special of Peach Shortcake. I decided to gamble with something new and this dessert did not disappoint! The deconstructed dessert had a sweet peach compote with a buttery-rich shortbread topping, and fresh whipped cream –  all topped with a warm caramel sauce. Just a lovely, elegant summer dessert.

1) Cones (West Village) – Corn Ice Cream

One Saturday morning, I was just minding my own business and browsing the New York Times when I came across this recipe for Corn Ice Cream.  Hold. The. Phone. I was enamored with the gorgeous photography from the article and obsessed with the prospect of having this delicious creation. Alas, I don’t have an ice cream maker, nor the room in my NYC kitchen to invest in one (and honestly, ain’t nobody got time for that!). However, not being one easily deterred from food, I used my Yelp!ing prowess to scour the city for corn ice cream. I found it at a small ice cream store in the West Village called Cones. It looks nondescript but carries a wide variety of different ice cream flavors – including CORN! They serve their corn ice cream with a healthy sprinkle of cinnamon. You would think that that combination would be odd but the sweetness of the corn melds beautifully with the cinnamon! The corn ice cream has definitely been my favorite dessert I’ve eaten all summer!

What about you, what’s your favorite dessert this summer?
