National Doughnut Day: Travel Edition [Special Eats]

photo 3Today, June 6, is National Doughnut Day, allegedly. I don’t have a calendar that marks all these food holidays but Facebook and Instragram told me it’s National Doughnut Day, and who am I to argue?* To celebrate this auspicious occassion, I wanted to share my recent doughnut experiences outside of the NYC area.

Federal Donuts, Philadelphia, Multiple Locations

This is the extent of my obsession with doughnuts: my husband and I took a two hour detour from our trip to the Poconos to stop by Philadelphia to pick up some delicious treats at Federal Donuts. I know, we are fatties.

I always prefer yeast over cake when it comes to my doughnuts but Federal Donuts only has the cake kind. I love them anyway especially because they have a bunch that are fresh to order like the Lavender Vanilla one pictured above. They also have specialty doughnuts with fun flavors like Chocolate Covered Strawberry (pictured below), Marshmallow Marshmallow, and Crumberry which is my favorite. It was crumbelievable!

However, my favorite thing about Federal Donuts is that they also have crazy good fried chicken so I can satisfy my savory tooth and sweet tooth in one outing. The chicken is also fried fresh to order and the one we got was with the chili garlic glaze. 😛 So spicy and delicious!

Glazed Gourmet Doughnuts, 481 King St. Charleston SC 29403

I was in Charleston, South Carolina recently and I had to make sure to stop by Glazed Gourmet. They have crazy cool flavors like Strawberry Basil Lime, Kulfi, and Apple Pie Cheddar. We stuck with the somewhat safe choices for our first try and we were not disappointed.

Clockwise from the top: Blueberry Cheesecake, Dark Chocolate Glaze, and Raspberry

Definitely stop by Glazed Gourmet if you find yourself in beautiful Charleston!

New York City Doughnuts

If you are looking to celebrate Doughnut Day here in NYC, there are some great options I have blogged about in the past.

Loukoumades

Remember my post about loukoumades or Greek doughnuts in Astoria?

PB&J doughnut

Or remember my favorite doughnut from last summer at Doughnut Plant in Manhattan? Look at that beauty!

So I have done my civic duty, you have no excuses to not have a doughnut today – it’s a national holiday! Wishing everyone a blessed and joyous Doughnut Day!

*Ed. Note: Being an attorney, I am totally one to argue so I will say based on my preliminary research (i.e. googling) today is actually Applesauce Cake Day, so social media, check your facts!
